Set in the 1950s, Anak Araw follows a Filipino albino who searches for his identity in an imaginary past. Believing himself to be of American descent, this “sun child” tries to teach himself English with a Tagalog-English dictionary as his guide. Meanwhile, a shark circles a lake, a mountain breathes fire, Nat King Cole sing a love song in Tagalog, and the dead come back to life. Integrating original celluloid footage with archival material, this mysterious, dreamlike fantasy explore the nature of Filipino identity within a postcolonial context.
